The surname Setinšek and Setinsek. Are they the same?

Not when it comes to some computer code. The Genealogy software, and all software for that matter, will process characters and alphabets differently depending on the character set that the software uses. It's crazy how many different character sets there are. I won't go into any explanation of character sets, because I'm sure it will just give you a headache like it did me.

The Slovenian, Croatian, and English alphabets are a little different. Although each language is a derivation of Latin, the obvious difference in surname Setinšek and Setinsek is š (Latin s with caron). The original Genealogy software considered Setinšek and Setinsek to be different surnames. All I had to do was change the character set in the software to something called UTF8, and that should fix the problem.

Now, within the Genealogy, there is no difference whether you search for Setinsek or Setinšek. Likewise, a First Name search for Joze, or Jože will give you all the names that contain joze, and jože. I might add that searching is also case independent. It doesn't matter whether you use capital letters or not.

The Genealogy will now be able to display, and search the Slovenian and Croatian alphabet correctly, and any other language differences that may pop-up that I don't know about yet.

It is known that the only early records to exist for persons were recorded by the Church institutions of the area. The Basilica of Our Lady of Lourdes was built 1908-1914 at Brestanica, Slovenia. Josef Setinsek emigrated to the US in 1911, and this was possibly the church closest to Kališovec and Krajna Brda (Josef's birthplace and residence) at the time.

It may not be possible to contact the Church through the internet, and if not, I'll send a letter requesting information for any records of the Setinsek family.

If you come across an email or other electronic means to contact the Church and request information it would be greatly appreciated.

Take a video tour of Slovenia and Croatia with Rick Steves. Rick is the popular videographer, travel and tour guide that broadcasts weekly on Public Television. Just click on the Web Links to view the videos on Hulu.com.

Slovenia and Croatia originally aired on Public Television in 2001. Take a tour of the beautiful port city of Dubrovnik, Croatia, the pearl of the Adriatic. Then cruise down the Dalmation Coast and explore the towns of Korcula and Split. Top off your Croatian tour at the spectacular Plitvice National Park.

Then, on to Slovenia and it's capital, Ljubljana. Get a feel for the Austrian architecture and history, and the thriving metropolis. Into the Slovenian countryside, you may be surprised to learn that the famous Lipizzan horse breed get it's name from one of the earliest stud farms in the town of Lipica. Next, into the Julian Alps (named after Julius Caesar), the southeastern fringe of the Alps, and learn of the bee and honey production industry, and the premier mountain resort - Lake Bled.

This episode will prove to be an eye-opening experience to the beauty and splendor of grandfather Josef's homeland.

Grandfather Joseph Setinsek's 100th Anniversary PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dennis
Wednesday, 24 November 2010 00:04

Grandfather Joseph Setinsek immigrated to the United States on Dec 22, 1911 to Ellis Island aboard the passenger ship Oceania. Joseph was 28 years old and traveling with his wife Anna (23) and infant son Frank.

The Ellis Island immigration records can be viewed here, courtesy of the The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation.

2011 will mark 100 years since Grandfather Joseph settled in the United States and began the history of the Setinsek family name in the U.S.

This 100 year anniversary is the emphasis for celebrating Joseph, his family, and the creation of this website. My hope is that by December 22, 2011, all the Setinsek family will celebrate together through the help of this website.

I'm looking forward to meeting and communicating with you, and invite everyone to have fun and interact as much as you possibly can here and other social sites.

Sincerely,

Dennis
